SmartPower, along with our partners at the Yale School of Environment and the Stern School at NYU, is launching the PowerSmart Campaign with selected communities in Connecticut. Think of it as Solarize - with batteries! It’s an opportunity for homeowners who own solar+battery to have clean, backup power when the grid goes down AND sell their stored energy back to the utility.
Connecticut residents have some pretty exciting programs to check out:
The Energy Storage Solutions program, administered by CT Green Bank, Eversource, and UI, offers residents the opportunity to receive a generous upfront rebate incentive for agreeing to have their battery drawn down during the summer months and for a handful of days during the winter months. Customers will get a payment each year based on the amount of electricity that is drawn from their battery.
The Eversource ConnectedSolutions program has a similar take but provides no upfront rebate incentive. ConnectedSolutions draws from your battery during peak days during the summer months. Customers will get a payment each year based on the amount of electricity that is drawn from the battery.
The choice between the two is based on whether the upfront rebate is worth allowing the battery to be tapped more often. Allowing the battery to be drawn down more often reduces homeowners’ control, but helps keep the grid green and reduces fossil-fuel use during peak times. Both programs have safeguards in place so that draw-downs are suspended in the event of a potential power outage.
